Books:

T.C. Steele and the Society of Western Artists, 1896-1914
by Rachel Berenson Perry, Curator of Fine Arts at the Indiana State Museum
Indiana University Press, 2009.

T.C. Steele and the Society of Western Artists, 1896-1914 relates T.C. Steele’s role in the founding of the Society of Western Artists, and chronicles the Society from its 1896 beginnings to its last exhibit in 1914. This beautiful volume documents a little-known aspect of Steele’s career, and relates his work to developments in the American art scene of the time. Perry’s analysis of Steele’s role as a catalyst for the development of regional Midwest impressionism includes an overview of the Hoosier Group and the founding of the Brown County Art Colony Perry examines Steele’s thoughts on plein air painting and his devotion to capturing on canvas the beauty of the Indiana countryside.  If you are an admirer of Steele’s work, a lover of beautiful art, or a nature lover (or all three!), this book will be a fine addition to your bookshelf.

This cloth bound book features over 60 full color reproductions of artworks by the society’s major artists, including Steele.  Many historic photographs are also included. 272 pages.

Images of Brown County by Ernie Pyle

In 1940, journalist Ernie Pyle visited Brown County and wrote a collection of articles describing his adventures. A "must" read for those who enjoy Pyle's inimitable style and humor, as well as for those who share the admiration Pyle came to have for the hills and inhabitants of the area.
